Welcome to the recruiting site of Mellonea, an Alliance RP-PvE Guild of the Kirin Tor realm. Please read this page in its entirety before applying, and thank you for visiting!
Introduction
"Mellonea" means "Friends". The word is already plural. It's pronounced "mel-low-NAY-uh" with a slight emphasis on the 'NAY' syllable.
We accept all Alliance races and classes, including Death Knights. We've been up and running since early November 2005. We currently have about 25 active players, not counting alts. We have a Ventrilo server reserved for instance runs, and a set guild management system consisting of the Council and the Guildmaster, who together deal with any member issues. We have members of all levels, but almost all of our members are leveling their main characters to 80 in Wrath of the Lich King.
In order to join, you need to read over the following rules and guidelines, and then follow the application form link at the end of this page.
One of the first things you need to know about Mellonea is that we are a Light RP guild, and have generally switched focus towards PvE instancing and raiding. There is never any pressure to RP, but all of us like RP and RPers very much. We RP when we feel like it, and the topic interests us, and encourage all members to write and share stories, host RP events, and interact with each other in-character. One of the many things that we have kept from our old Medium-Heavy RP days are our communication standards. We expect all members to demonstrate a high level of maturity, and to be able to chat intelligently (and preferably in complete sentences). We do wish to emphasize that maturity does not mean a ban on silliness - we love to have fun, too! We are first and foremost a group of friends, and that means that we think before we speak because we care about how we speak to one another.
Names
We are a Light Role-Playing Guild, and your character needs to have a name that would appear naturally in the Warcraft universe. Your name therefore must comply with our guild naming conventions as decided by the Council, or that character will not be considered for membership. The council of Mellonea considers the name of your character as the first test of an application. Each name is judged individually, and on a case-by-case basis.
Your name must comply with the World of Warcraft Terms of Use. This means your name should be:
- A single word (no Monsterkiller)
- NOT a famous name (no God, Homersimpson, or Drizzt)
- NOT a copyrighted term (no Chevy or Pepsi)
- NOT a dictionary word (no Guitar or Hero)
- NOT gibberish or leetspeak (no Asdfghjkl or L0ll3rsk4tes)
Additionally, your name should be appropriate for your character's race, or if not, your RP backstory should have an interesting justification for how your character got an unusual name.
If your character has a name even remotely similar to any of these examples, and you would still like to enter our guild, please note in your application that you're going to make a paid name change. If you have a question about whether your name is acceptable, please contact the Council.
Chat
Guild chat is divided into in-character (IC) and out-of-character (OOC) halves. The normal guild chat channel (/g) is in-character and intended for RP discussions and in-character coordination of face-to-face RP. All guild ranks are officers, and so can use the normal guild office channel (/o) to speak with one another out-of-character, on any topic. In addition to the chat channels, we rent a Ventrilo voice chat server, which is used for conversation and guild instance runs. The same chat conduct rules apply there as in the in-game chat channels.
For RP purposes, we assume that all of our characters speak into their Hearthstone, and it can be heard by anyone else in the guild. It works somewhat like a conference call using the speakerphone on a modern mobile: guild members can also hear nearby sound effects, such as an explosion, the sound of battle, or your character collapsing to the floor. Guild members however can not see you perform any actions, so please try to avoid the equivalent of emotes in /g.
As stated above, we are friends, and we value maturity. We are all playing World of Warcraft to have fun and relax, and we want our chat channels to be fun and relaxing too. Follow the simple common sense rule: "Don't be a jerk". We believe that a group of mature friends can speak about any OOC topic without tempers flaring, but please err on the side of caution when discussing contentious real-world issues; guild members may hold vastly different opinions, so be respectful of all sides of an issue, no matter what you personally believe. If you want a full on flamewar, there are plenty of other forums and blogs out there where you can vent. We are a family-friendly guild, as some of our members allow their younger children to play with them, so during primetime hours, try to keep the chat channels PG. The rest of the time, we are more flexible about a wide range of discussions, as long as everyone is being considerate.
If someone doesn't reply to you chat message or tell immediately, don't take it personally; patience is a virtue, and in an online medium there are any number of reasons why they couldn't get back to you right away. Don't gossip about other members behind their backs; if you have a problem with someone, work it out with them, or, in the worst case, speak about it with a Council member. Don't spam chat with junk, don't type in all caps, don't spew nonsense, and don't beg for gold or items. Be polite in your requests for information, assistance, craftable items, and the like. There are no stupid questions!
Be respectful of your fellow guild members: slurs and cruel insults will be stopped immediately by an officer, and that kind of behavior is likely to get you kicked out of the guild if it continues. Be respectful of your fellow players: remember that in public channels you represent Mellonea. Speak to non-members with just as much respect as you reserve for members and your closest friends.
If you take issue with something said by another member in one of the chat channels, talk to them about it. If you can't resolve the problem with a friendly apology, contact an officer. If no officer is available, contact the Council, and we will try to help you resolve the problem.
Gameplay
Maturity and good sportsmanship are expected as a matter of course. We're all here to have fun, so try to have a good attitude even when the game isn't going your way.
Remember that you have a big <Mellonea> flag over your head, so it is very important that you display a good example to all other players in WoW. When grouping with non-members, please act as you would with guild members. We are a well-respected guild, and we value that reputation; don't let us down.
When interacting with Horde, where there is no communication available, whether it's in a Battleground, World PvP, or otherwise, again remain respectful even in competition. Don't ninja gathering nodes, don't corpse-camp, don't kill questgivers for no reason, don't use obnoxious /emotes, and so on. They're a community of players too, and many of us have friends and alts who play Horde-side.
When grouping, everyone should agree upon a fair loot method before starting the quest or instance. Make it clear ahead of time what item(s) you're interested in, and assign someone to be a disenchanter if needed. We find that Need/Pass for BoP items and Need/Greed for BoE items, passing if you've already gotten at least one item, is a pretty good system. If no one wants an item, do a greed roll on the disenchanting results or to sell the item to a vendor. If you're leading the group, don't change loot rules after you've started, and don't abuse your leadership powers. Don't be a ninja.
When trading with a guild member, be fair. We expect you to offer your crafting services for free (that is, without tip) to all guild members who can provide the materials, when convenient for both of you. If you want to donate items, materials, or gold, deposit them in the Guild Vault. Generosity is never a fault!
If you have an issue with a non-member, whether in a public chat channel, trade negotiation, or group, try to resolve it on your own. Contact a Mellonea officer (or, where relevant, a GM) if you need assistance in resolving the problem.
We accept players of all skill levels, although if you're in a group you'll be expected to have at least a basic knowledge of your class and your role in the group. If there is something you don't understand, find a guild member who can help you! Some of our members are very experienced end-game raiders, and can help you out with many aspects of playing your character, including gear, enchants/gems/glyphs, talent specs, as well as specific instance strategies. In the early stages of Wrath, we'll all be new players, so be just as willing to learn as you are to teach (or vice-versa).
Management
The current Guildmaster is Kjallstrom, replacing Sykora, Mellonea's founder. All management decisions are made by consensus by the Guildmaster's Council, consisting of Kjallstrom, Sykora, Khandril, Blayden, Nadezda, and Seoman. Where possible, we follow Sykora's original vision for Mellonea.
All members are expected to have read all of the rules: this page is a general guide, as our forums have more detailed examples to help our members understand our guidelines. Once you've been accepted to the guild, you'll be expected to sign some of the rules.
Live by the 3 Rs: Respect, Responsibility, and Reputation. We expect all members to demonstrate these virtues, which is why our application process is so strict.
Members should be willing to adapt to new situations and make suggestions. If you think an individual, or the guild as a whole, could be doing something better, feel free to express those opinions at an appropriate time in a respectful manner. For some issues, a forum post is appropriate; for others, you should contact the Council.
Punishments for breaking the guild rules will depend on the severity and circumstance of the offense, and will be entirely at the discretion of the Guildmaster and the Council. Punishments may range from a verbal warning to being permanently removed from the guild. We are very reasonable and understanding people, but repeated disregard for the rules or our positive community will not be tolerated.
Recruitment
We are currently in an open recruitment period. We always welcome new players who are interested in RP and a fun, friendly community.
Each application is considered on its own merit, but all application decisions are final. If your application is turned down by the Mellonea Council, be assured that the decision wasn't a snap judgement. We all see your application and discuss it; we don't dislike you, we just agree that you wouldn't be a good fit for the Mellonea community. If your application is rejected because of your character's name, and you are still interested in joining, you can reapply once your paid name change goes through.
If you are planning to transfer a character from another server, please wait until your application has been accepted by the Council before you pay for the transfer. We do not want to get into the situation where you're out money, and stuck on Kirin Tor for a few months, but have been rejected from the guild.
Current members are asked to fill out an application for alts that they want in the guild; this allows the Council to double-check the new character's name, and also helps us keep track of who everyone is. Alt applications need not be as complete as an initial application
Feel free to encourage your friends, both real-life and in-game, to apply to Mellonea. However, be aware that while the recommendation of a member is a positive note on an application, it does not guarantee membership. Your friends must meet the same standards to join that you did.
Application
If we haven't scared you off yet, fill out an application! We look forward to hearing from you!
You'll be contacted by the Council by e-mail (make sure to use a valid e-mail address in the application form) to inform you of the status of your application. If you are accepted, you'll receive a set of instructions explaining how to get join the guild in-game, and how to join our forums.
